I remember when it was a New Years Eve and I didnt know what j walking was until now and i got into a arguement with a cop and got done for j walking lol.. damn pigs
mrvdv85 u really got fine for J walking? on New Years eve??? where? in the city? if it is in the city, i thought it would be no traffic allowed so you should be able to walk freely...
Actually booking people for J walking makes sense, do you realise how much it costs us all when a person is run down and sometimes hospitalised for months due to injuries caused by walking across a road at the wrong place.
To the poster above who was booked on New Years Eve, please read the papers on New Years day about the number of inebriated people who stepped out in front of cars driven by equally inebriated people, some are no longer with us.

Unfortunately i've had personal experience, run over aged 12yrs.23 years of pain, disfunction and medical stuff ups.I was crossing the road at an intersection,at the tail end of a large group of kids.I hadn't checked what the little flashing man was doing an subsequently got collected.Yes you could argue that the driver should have been taking more care but it really doesn't help you after the fact.I spent several years driving in the Melbourne CBD,i'm really careful but i lost count of how may times people stepped in front of me when i had right of way.Luckily for them i managed to stop but they could easily have been hit by a less observant driver.Perhaps if i'd prevously been fined i may have learnt my lesson and avoided stuffing up the rest of my life. That's why the police fine people for it.
In Brisbane's Fortitude Valley in 2007, all the nightclubs were raided by dozens and dozens of police one weekend. In the media the next day, they announced 2 drugs arrests, and 37 jaywalking infringements.
I reckon TechSpec (above at comment 2) was pretty spot on.
Laws are there for a reason. Like someone already said, a pedestrian being hit by a car costs a lot of state money and police and other emergency services' time.
Hasn't happened to me here here but when I was in Seattle a few years back I was cautioned for jay walking. I was let off because I was a tourist but from then on I noticed that in most US cities I visited very few people crossed the street except at pedestrian crossings and intersections. And they have some BIG city blocks!
