I would like to tell as many people as possible about my small win against the Westpac Bank. We applied for an owner builder home loan with them 6 months ago and today have finally received our first progress payment. During this application we have had nothing but mistakes, omissions, incorrect information, wrong loan offer documents, wrong replace loan documents, lost documents and my list goes on and on.

The final straw was when they advised that we had to have an independent inspection carried out of our concrete slab and it had to be done by the same company that carried out our original independent report. Unfortunately, as we were unaware of this requirement when we had the original report carried out we used a company not local so for them to do the inspection it was a 3 hour round trip and $750.

I made the complaint to Westpac on Monday and today (Thursday) they advised that they would refund us $1,500 in associated costs. Obviously, the bank thinks they did something wrong as well! They have also amended our terms so all future progress inspections (another 4) can be carried out by someone closer.

I would encourage everyone to make a complaint if they feel the bank have done something wrong regardless of how small. They have to investigate every complaint and although it is only a small win for us I am sure if banks had to pay this amount to more customers they would start to pull their heads in quite quickly. Banks won’t change unless customers demand change.

Well done! Yes the banks aren't always reasonable with this kind of stuff. Westpac in particular is very much focused on their procedures for loans and anything that is outside of their normal requirements causes a lot of trouble!

There are plenty of other lenders that do owner builder loans with fewer hassles. Unfortunately almost every lender is very strict with DIY builders.

Good luck with your project (and WBC)!

Yes, thats good to hear all of the conveyancing matters I have dealt with have been fraught with mistakes caused by bank miscalculations, omissions and errors which I have had to spend time fixing up. Its good to hear that someone has finally had a win.
