Hi all,

I have a bit of a strange one here. For a couple of months, I've had neighbours knocking on my door and asking for handouts, usually in the afternoons and only sparingly. They'd be asked to leave and would after picking up some garbage from my front yard.

To remedy this issue, we cleaned up everything in the front yard and I changed some (bad) habits. Since then, it's been pretty sweet until two days ago.

We had a knock on the door at midnight, asking for us to ring our same neighbour a taxi then asking for cigarettes. Being big taxi users ourselves, we decided to at least be nice and ring a cab for them but stoutly refused the second (constant) request.

Tonight, it happened again...though my husband is asleep so I thought it best not to even indicate that anyone in the house was awake. They came onto the property, opened my screen door and knocked twice on my front door at 3 o'clock in the morning. I would guess it was simply because I have the living room light on to prevent glare from my computer but I didn't want to indicate someone was awake.

I don't know if I'm over-reacting on this issue but I hate being approached in my home and doubly despise being bothered between 8:30pm and 7am unless someone's set something up with me beforehand, so I'm thinking of keeping a record and looking into trespassing legal action.

Am I just over-reacting to an annoyingly "needy" neighbour?

You could tell than that you are unable to assist them, and please don't call again. Get a lock for your front gate and place a 'No Trespassers' sign on the fence.

Once you have done that, and if the intrusions continue, call the police. You have an option to take out and AVO if they continue after that.
I am NOT a lawyer. Anything said is NOT legal advice.
